Zarah Cabañas

I am interested in the spaces between words: the things we feel before we can name them, the way a single moment can reshape our understanding of our differences, and in all the absurd ways we behave to connect with each other.

Music is at the center of my practice. I experience it physically, as rhythm, vibration, atmosphere, memory, and desire. I came toward the moving image through music, making images that evoke tension, rhythm, and feeling before it can be understood. My work in live visual performance grew from this impulse, binging music, image, bodies, and audience into a shared, ephemeral, and often euphoric experience.

Sensuality runs through my work. I am interested in the body as an instrument for perception and communication, attraction, anticipation, intimacy, vulnerability, and the charged space between wanting and being seen. I am drawn to places where longing and imagination begin to fill what language cannot.

Nature offers another language, and my practice moves across image, live visual performance, sound, installation, and immersive experiences both inside and outside traditional artistic spaces.

Increasingly I explore the unstable territory between intimacy and distance, presence and absence, reality and projection. What do we invent about one another? How can a sound, a glance, or a moment of silence alter the emotional landscape between people? My work lives in that tension between the profound and ridiculous, the erotic and ephemeral, the intimate and the unknowable.
